Frontline News announces political cartoon competition winners

Frontline News Director Mordechai Sones Friday announced the winners of the political cartoon competition that commenced in February. They are Brett Howell, from near Minneapolis, Minnesota, Jim Hope, from Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Melvin Jones from Columbus, Ohio.

In the first round, contestants produced original work based on issues gleaned from articles published on Frontline News.

In the second round, contestants were asked to produce an original cartoon in their own unique style on the subject of chin-maskers.

In the final elimination round, contestants were asked to produce an original cartoon in their own unique style over the caption: “I'm from the government, and I'm here to help.

“Caricature is a graphical depiction that exaggerates the physical or spiritual traits of its object, rendering them laughable, absurd, peculiar, or different,” said Sones. "From the Italian word caricare, ‘to overload’ or ‘to exaggerate’, political caricature goes back to the dawn of drawing. A skilled political cartoonist must be able to use satire to put matters in their proper perspective, rendering the objects of their comic ridicule laughable and pathetic, while maintaining an appropriate sense of proportion and evoking human empathy.

"Frontline News is fortunate to have identified three outstanding individuals who have consistently demonstrated their ability to translate raw meaning and form through aesthetics into constructive expression of rational thought.

“We look forward to working with our winners to depict current events via the mirror of caricature to produce a direct, authentic, and influential expression of views among freedom-loving Americans which our readers will never forget.”

BRETT HOWELL:

Brett Howell was born and raised in the tranquil landscape of northern Indiana. As a child, he established an early interest in art, a fondness for the daily comics, “and has been daydreaming ever since.”

With the support of family, friends and art instructors he continued to pursue his love of art, attending and earning his degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design. Over the last two decades Brett has worked as an industrial designer for small, medium, and large size companies, spending the last nine years working for a Fortune 500 corporation in the Twin Cities...and yes, still chasing the dream.

JIM HOPE:

It was while Jim Hope was in high school, that his cartooning really started to take off. Jim started doing cartoons for the school newspaper, “off-the-wall cartoon strips that never saw the light of day” and caricatures of friends. “Some, I’m proud to say, still have these creations hanging on walls or refrigerators.”

From there, his dream of becoming a cartoonist began to take shape, but his paying job was in printing and graphics. The local newspapers began to take an interest in Jim's cartooning, and so began his part-time career as an editorial cartoonist.

As a former member of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, Jim's work has appeared in the political humor books Attack of the Political Cartoonist and The Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year – 2006, ‘07, ‘08 Editions. Jim also received first place honors from the Virginia Press Association for Editorial Cartooning for 2004. His work can also be seen on his Facebook page.

Jim says: “I owe all of my artistic skills to my late grandmother, Imogene Evans. An artist in her own right, she introduced me to all types of mediums and styles. With her cultural influence and my warped sense of humor, cartooning seemed to fit me. It seems to have paid off in more ways than one.”

Jim lives in historic Fredericksburg, Virginia USA with his wife, Shirley. They have two children, Amy and Jim, Jr. and six grandchildren.

MELVIN JONES:

Melvin Jones is a self-taught freelance artist who has worked in some form of health care over the past 15 years:

He does a variety of art projects from drawings to comics, digital paintings/illustrations and even design and logo work. “I especially enjoy making digital paintings based off of Bible verses. I’m always interested it learning different styles and techniques to add to my artistic arsenal. When I’m not working on commissions I enjoy painting pieces for my website Righteousrevelation.com. It is my dream to continue to expand my art career into a full time job and share my art with the world.”
